Prepare for Flooding
The single most important flood rule, plus how to protect your home and family.
Turn around, don’t drown
Never walk or drive through floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you down; one to two feet can float a vehicle. You cannot see hazards or how deep it is.
Protect your home
- Move valuables and documents to higher floors.
- Know how to shut off utilities, and do so if instructed.
- Consider flood insurance — standard homeowners policies usually do not cover floods.
When water rises
If told to evacuate, go. If trapped, move to the highest level — but do not climb into a closed attic where you could be trapped by rising water. Signal for help from the roof if necessary.
