Water Storage Basics

How much water to store, how to store it safely, and how to make water safe if supplies run out.

How much

Store at least one gallon per person per day, for at least three days — that covers drinking and basic sanitation. Two weeks is better if you have the space. Add extra for pets, hot climates, children, and anyone who is sick or nursing.

Store it right

  • Use food-grade containers or commercially bottled water.
  • Keep it cool and dark; away from gasoline, pesticides, and direct sun.
  • Replace stored tap water every 6 months; note the date.

Make water safe

If you run out, you can make most water safe to drink: bring it to a rolling boil for one minute, or add unscented household bleach (about 8 drops per gallon), stir, and let it stand 30 minutes. When in doubt, boil.
